Don’t forget to pack your Korea travel guide, and get ready to have a blast in Korea. Check out the list below for eight can’t miss spots to include on your Korea travel itinerary!
1. Gyeongbokgung Palace
Gyeongbokgung Palace is an amazing cultural site, located in the northern part of Seoul. Home to the royal family of the Joseon dynasty and constructed in 1395, the palace is a striking example of Joseon architecture. It is one of the most impressive palaces built during this dynasty, owing to its sculptures, size, and detail. As a bonus, if you visit Gyeongbokgung Palace, you’ll also be close to the National Palace Museum of Korea and the National Folk Museum, which are located in the same complex at the palace. These museums are also wonderful cultural attractions in Korea, which shouldn’t be missed!
2. Jeju Island
If you enjoy natural scenery, Jeju Island is a must-see place to visit in Korea! As a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, the island is a natural paradise, with stunning coastlines and forests. Also home to the highest peak in Korea, Hallasan Mountain, Jeju Island offers plenty of activities, such as beach explorations, delicious cuisine, and nature walks. For anyone interested in getting out of the city, Jeju Island should be first on your Korea travel guide!
3. Seoraksan National Park
For the best hiking, you’ll find the best places to visit in Korea are in Seoraksan National Park! This national park holds the most famous mountain range in the entire country. Photographers will go wild with the extraordinary views, from the pine forests and tall peaks to the lakes and streams which wind through the scenery. You may even catch a glimpse of some of the wildlife in the area, as it’s home to over 2,000 species you’re bound to see a few!
4. The Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ)
The DMZ is an essential spot for anyone visiting Korea and included on every Korea travel guide! This is the boundary area between North and South Korea, which is a ceasefire zone. Book your tour with a Korean travel guide, so you can see the Joint Security Area (JSA) and learn about all the modern history between these two nationals. One cool element of visiting the JSA is that you can stand on a section of land that is technically in North Korea. You should note that you will need to book a Korean tour to visit the DMZ and JSA, as access is limited to those with authorized guides.
5. Andong
Also known as the Capital City of Korean Spiritual Culture, Andong has been a noteworthy spot for over 2,000 years. This charming city is teeming with beautiful buildings, as well as cultural significance. The most popular place to visit within the city is the Andong Hahoe Folk Village. In this folk village, you can explore the Andong cultural heritage, which has been preserved very meticulously by the local community. Beyond this, you can also dig into a variety of delicious foods! Andong is most well-known for jjimdak, a noodle dish with chicken, and soju, a regional alcoholic beverage. Both are worth a try if you find yourself in Andong!
6. Gyeongju
Step into history with Gyeongju! This amazing spot definitely deserves to be on any list of places to visit in Korea! Over 2,000 years old, Gyeongju used to be the capital city of the Silla Kingdom. Here, you can see the famous Bulguksa Temple, which is a great example of Buddhist art and architecture. If that isn’t enough for you, you can also visit the Seokguram Grotto. Although it does require an extra hike up the hill(or we can drive as well!), the Buddhist artifacts and exhibition at the Grotto is definitely worth it.
7. Seoul
If you go to some of the other places on our list, you’ll see Seoul! However, Seoul is worth mentioning on its own. The capital city of South Korea deserves a few days on its own to explore. Seoul is a unique city, which combines old and new architecture, as well as old and new culture. You’ll be astounded by the museums, Myeongdong Shopping street, and more! In addition to the Gyeongbokgung Palace, you can see the famous Changdeok-gung, a 15th century palace as well.
8. Busan
If you’re willing to venture outside of Seoul to see another city, Busan should be next on your list of places to visit in Korea! It is the second-largest city in South Korea, but is very different from the capital city of Seoul. As opposed to Seoul, Busan is a port-city with incredible beaches. Beyond the beaches, you’ll also have easy access to nearby hot springs and other outdoor activities. One of the most fun things to do is to see the Gamcheon Cultural Village, which combines local culture with stunning views over the water. Since it is colloquially called the Santorini of Korea, you know it’s going to be beautiful.
